Ideal experience
5–7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on backend development Deep comfort across the full stack — you can architect a database schema in the morning and polish a React component in the afternoon Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and modern frameworks (React, Next.js, or similar) Strong backend fundamentals: API design (REST and/or GraphQL), relational and non-relational databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.), and server-side frameworks (Node.js, Python, or equivalent) Working fluency with Git/GitHub, CI/CD tooling, containerization (Docker), and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Vercel) Genuine AI fluency — you use LLMs and AI coding tools daily to accelerate your work, and you stay current on what's possible A zero-to-one mindset: you're comfortable building in ambiguity, defining requirements alongside stakeholders, and shipping without a detailed spec Excellent communication skills — you can explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical teammates clearly and concisely A bias toward action and ownership. You see a gap, you fill it.
About the role
We're looking for a Full-Stack Engineer who wants more than a ticket queue. This is a high-autonomy, high-impact role where you'll work across both sides of the house: shaping the customer-facing product that lawyers use every day and building the internal tools and systems that keep Manifest running at scale. You'll work directly with leadership and cross-functional teams to tackle the most pressing problems at the company — and your code will touch everything from what our customers see to how we operate behind the scenes. This isn't a role where you wait for a spec. You'll be embedded alongside product, operations, legal, and growth teams to understand what needs to exist — then prototype, build, and iterate fast. If you're the kind of engineer who thinks in products (not just pull requests), who can move from a napkin sketch to a working tool in days using AI-assisted development, and who gets energized by owning the full picture — this role was designed for you.

You thrive in environments where priorities shift quickly and you need to figure things out without a detailed playbook. You're the type of person who gets energized by variety and loves the satisfaction of making messy processes clean and efficient. You're comfortable being wrong, iterating quickly, and asking questions when you need help. You also have strong communication skills and can translate between technical and non-technical teams. You don't need to be told exactly what to do — you can take a general direction like 'our invoicing process is a mess' and come back with a concrete plan to fix it.
Not for you if
If you prefer clearly defined roles with predictable daily routines, this isn't for you. Startups are chaotic by nature, and ops roles amplify that chaos. You also shouldn't apply if you need extensive training or mentorship to be productive — we'll support your growth, but you need to be self-directed from day one. Finally, if you're looking to specialize deeply in one area rather than being a generalist who tackles whatever needs fixing, you'll probably find this role frustrating.
